Founded on January 28, 1878, the Yale Daily News is the nation’s oldest college daily newspaper. It is financially and editorially independent and publishes Monday through Friday during the academic year in both New Haven and Yale. The News also publishes a weekly Friday supplement known as WKND, the Yale Daily News Magazine and a variety of special issues throughout the year. These include the Yale-Harvard game day issue, the Commencement issue and a first-year issue. The News also has a series of annual special editions celebrating Indigenous, Black, Latino and Asian American communities in collaboration with Yale’s cultural centers and affiliated student groups.
The Daily News is one of the largest circulated metropolitan newspapers in the United States, with a readership of 200,000 daily. The newspaper is published in tabloid format and was the first newspaper in the United States printed in this format. The paper has a long history of controversy and is regarded as a leading source of urban political news in the United States. In recent years, the newspaper has a liberal bias and is frequently contrasted with the right-wing New York Post.
The New York Daily News is owned by Tronc, the publishing arm of Tribune Company. The newspaper has a AllSides Media Bias Rating of Left. Sources with a Bias Rating of Left are those that primarily support liberal, progressive or left-wing thought and/or policy agendas. This is the highest AllSides Media Bias Rating. The Daily News is headquartered in the News Building, an art deco landmark on 42nd Street designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood, which was used as the model for the Daily Planet building of the Superman films. The News relocated in 1995 to a more modern building on 50th Street, although it retains its call letters and maintains the historic globe in the lobby. The News is also the parent corporation of television station WPIX, which continues to be based in the old building.
