Entertainment is a broad concept that has evolved from an individual choosing a private entertainment from the now enormous array of pre-recorded products to entertain themselves; to banquets and parties of all types and sizes; to performances adapted to any venue and intended for a global audience. In its most familiar forms, entertainment can be amusing and lighthearted, although many kinds of entertainment have serious purposes. Some have come to be so familiar that they are taken for granted, such as ceremonies, religious festivals, or satire. The word “entertainment” is derived from the Latin intertenere, which means to hold inside.
